What we do
Defensores manages 4 protected areas in Guatemala: Sierra de las Minas Biosphere Reserve, Bocas del Polochic Wildlife Refuge, Sierra del Lacandón National Park and Naciones Unidas National Park. These protected areas, represent 5% of Guatemala´s territory. We also work on the creation and management of private and municipal protected reserves mainly in the Monte Espinoso Seco region of the Motagua Valley.
The areas Defensores manages are home to 80% of all the plant and animal species reported in Guatemala. At Defensores we also actively participate in regional conservation initiatives in Central and Latin America.
